Born in Frankfurt, she later lived in Amsterdam. From 1699 to 1701, she traveled to Suriname in South America to observe and document its natural life.
Her research inspired Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium (The Metamorphosis of the Insects of Suriname), published in Amsterdam in 1705.
