This is a Japanese hand-carved cedar wood (jindai sugi) pagoda-stype round andon or lantern with bronze fittings and ring handle, c. 1860 - 1880 (Edo to Meiji period). Hand-carved with big dramatic grain and a rippling roof, this was a garden or temple lantern. Some rice paper remaining, could be electrified. Dimensions: 14” h by 17” dia.
