FAYOUM POTTERY SCHOOL, Egypt
This is the story of Tunis, a village in the Fayoum Oasis of Egypt, and how the courage of one woman and her gift of pottery making transformed it. Drawn to this remote area in the desert — three palm trees, an azure lake, and a vast sky — she built her home and atelier there.
In the 1970s, Swiss artists Evelyne Porret and Michel Pastore brought their most precious possessions: their mastery of pottery making, their pioneering spirit and their hope to establish a school. This school is set in a typical mudbrick compound and was the perfect place to the train local children and adults in the local pottery traditions.
The children who learned from Evelyne have become celebrated potters. She provided them with a skill and livelihood, and they are the inheritors of an incredible legacy.
From humble beginnings, something extraordinary was born. A cycle of knowledge and tradition was established, proving that even without grand plans, remarkable things can emerge.
